THREE WALKS

Three walks from Podere Sant Angelo holiday cottages

There are many lovely walks around Roccalbegna and Monte Amiata. The advantage of these three walks is that you can start diectly from the Podere Sant Angelo cottages without getting into your car!

Podere Sant Angelo, June

The three walks take you to Roccalbegna and the hamlets of Triana and Rochette di Fazio, each with their individual features. There is also a longer walk to Semproniano which we didn’t attempt during our week’s stay. On the map below the arrow indicates the cross roads about a minute away from the cottages. The attractive part is that there is a trattoria at the destination of each walk, although you still have to walk back - you can, of course, leave someone behind with the car and invite them for lunch when you arrive at your destination!!

Roccalbegna

The walk to Roccalbegna takes about an hour, depending on how often you stop and look at all the wonderful flowers. You turn right as you leave the garden of Podere Sant Angelo, going down hill towards the cross roads. Remember that Roccalbegna is quite high which means you will be going uphill for most of the second part.

To Roccalbegna

The walk is along a gravel road and there is very little shade so if you happen to have a rare cloudy day during your stay then this would be ideal for this walk. We did this walk in June and the flora and butterflies were wonderful. It’s handy if you have a plant or butterfly book with you. The best trattoria in Roccalbegna is ‘La Grotta’ (0564 989112).

La Grotta

Places to visit:

• Ss. Pietro e Paolo, Romanic church from the 1200s, it has a beautiful, recently restored triptych of the Senese school
• the Rocca, the pinnacle of rock that towers above the village, there are wonderful views from here down the Albegna valley to the sea
• the Cassero, the Senese fortification opposite the Rocca, again there are wonderful views from here
• a wander around the lanes of the village

In Roccalbegna you can also do some shopping. The one shop not to miss is the butcher’s. Try his delicious sausages and the ricotta cheese.

Triana

The second walk to Triana is the shortest one. Leaving Podere Sant Angelo you turn left up the hill and after about 15 minutes turn left into the forest along a marked track. As we walked through the forest we navigated around the mudbaths frequented by the local wild boar.
When you reach Triana the first sight that impresses is Triana castle (Castello di Triana) which dates back to 776 in documents of the San Salvatore Abbey. In 1388 it was turned over to the Piccolomini of Siena until 1962. For six centuries the Piccolomini owned all the land around as far as the eye can see. Graham, the owner of Podere Sant Angelo can give you more details of its chequered history.

Triana, the castle

Having arrived at Triana you must eat at the ‘Osteria da Clara’ (0564 989228). The food is delicious and the owners are charming.

Rochette di Fazio

Rochette di Fazio is a little hamlet on the top of a hill. This walk takes you down to the Albegna river and then up to Rochette. On leaving Podere Sant Angelo turn right and walk down the gravel road until the last farmhouse. At the end of the road there’s a path leading down to the river which is very cool and pleasant on a hot day. You walk along the river bank on the right hand side until you are forced to cross the stream and go through woods upwards. At a certain point you reach a road leading to Rochette. Turn left up the hill. Rochette is very picturesque and has a great osteria 'Il Piccolo Borgo' (0564 986173).

The wildlife and flora are so wonderful, please try these walks!

Walking and mountain biking

The local tourist office has produced two very useful booklets (both available for reference at Podere Sant'Angelo):

'Amiata without haste ... by foot' - this contains descriptions of 10 walks around and over Monte Amiata (1,738 m.)
'Amiata by bike' - 14 mountain bike rides (with lots of detail) over Monte Amiata and beyond.
